Book Review: Ayodhya Ram Mandir by Swadesh Singh

📙BOOK: Ayodhya Ram Mandir
📘AUTHOR: Swadesh Singh
📗GENRE: Non-Fiction, Mythological History

📝RATING: 4/5

✒️MY TAKE:

📙On the historic day of 22nd Jan, the Hindus all over the world celebrated the homecoming of their favourite son, Shri Ram, in Ayodhya Ram Mandir while the people from other community joined in the fervour of euphoria.

📙Ayodhya Ram Mandir written by Swadesh Singh makes for an apt read to understand the inception of Ramayana and its adaptations across various parts of the globe, tailor-made basis their cultures.

📙This book sheds light on the spiritual and cultural importance of Ayodhya, which foms the epicentre of the Ikshvaku dynasty, of which Ram was the 81st scion. Ayodhya has been historically identified as a flourishing city across various accounts of travellers including the famous Chinese traveller, Hiuen Tsang, who visited India during the 7th century.

📙Apart from the significance of Ayodhya being the birth place of Lord Ram, the author has provided a highly informative account of this place being the focal point of reverence for Buddhists and Jains. Ayodhya has housed thousands of Buddhist monasteries and had been graced by the presence of Vardamana Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara and founder of Jainism.

📙I was enamoured by the author's detailing of the rich history of 'Ayodhya', which roughly translates into 'invincible fortress'. The author has provided factual documentation of the 500-year old struggle which started with establishing the presence of Ram Mandir on a disputed spot which had been razed during the Mughal rule.

📙It has been a surreal experience to read this book wherein the author lucidly put across the legal and operational chronological events which led to the consecration ceremony of Lord Ram in Ayodhya. While witnessing the 'Pran Pratistha' or the consecration ceremony live today on television, I almost felt nostalgic remembering the snippets of the book which led to the culmination of the historic event today.

📙Overall, I would recommend Ayodhya Ram Mandir to all the readers who would like to understand the importance of Ayodhya as a holy site for the Hindus and how the place has been rebuilt to its former glory from where Ram Rajya emanated.
